Duckwitz

DuckwitzThe Danish Jews escaped the fate of millions of others because Danish citizens showed tremendous courage. Yet they would not have been able to do so without first the act of a German diplomat, G.F. Duckwitz.

Duckwitz had lived in Denmark for many years working for the German government as a Naval counselor. After the occupation began in 1940 he held a position of trust in the Third Reich.

It was Duckwitz who warned that the Jews were to be purged from Denmark on October 1 and 2, 1943 - Rosh Hashanna and Shabbat. The Germans thought the plan to be perfect because they would catch the Jews unaware in their homes and force them to board ships already anchored in Copenhagen harbor.
